Your first wing foiling lesson.Arrive with a clear plan.

A first lesson is a chance to learn how the wing and board work together, understand the local setting and build skills with an instructor. Ask what the session covers before booking: a beginner introduction and a first-flight lesson can have different starting points.

Can a complete beginner take a lesson?

Look for a session explicitly designed for first-time riders. The RYA’s introductory wingsurfing course requires no previous experience and starts with wing handling ashore and afloat. Its wingfoiling First Flights course builds on existing wingsurfing skills. Those are useful distinctions when comparing lesson descriptions; individual schools may use a different teaching sequence.

Tell the instructor about your swimming confidence and any surfing, sailing, windsurfing, kiting or foiling experience. Ask about swimming requirements, age limits and anything that could affect your participation before paying.

What should the first session cover?

Ask the school to explain its progression, from the briefing and equipment introduction to supervised practice. Early wingsurfing skills include controlling the wing, balancing on the board and steering. Foiling adds the challenge of controlling the board as it lifts above the water.

Before the session, confirm how the instructor communicates with you, where practice takes place and what support is available if you need to return to shore. Let your instructor choose the equipment and progression for your ability and the day’s conditions.

Do I need to buy equipment first?

Check what the lesson price includes before buying anything. Ask specifically about the board, wing, foil if used, helmet, buoyancy equipment and any clothing or footwear the school requires. Confirm whether equipment is shared and how much individual instruction you receive.

Bring the items on the school’s own packing list. Ask about suitable sun protection, drinking water, a towel, a change of clothes and secure storage for belongings. Equipment and clothing needs vary by location and season.

Will I foil in my first lesson?

Do not make first-session flight your booking requirement. Ask what a realistic outcome looks like for someone with your experience. A useful session can build wing control, balance and confidence even before sustained flight. Conditions and individual progress affect what you can work on.

If you already ride on foil, describe what you can do consistently and the specific skill you want to improve. That helps a school suggest coaching instead of repeating an introductory session.

What should I ask before booking?

Keep some flexibility in your trip schedule and confirm the provider’s weather policy. A forecast or inquiry alone does not confirm a lesson.
