Find your base in Hood River.
Hood River is a base for wing foiling in the Columbia River Gorge, with published instruction ranging from first wing handling to advanced coaching. Its appeal is the combination of local expertise, equipment businesses and a waterfront built around several kinds of recreation.
Arrange an instructor-led progression. Controlling a wing on a finned board is a different session from riding a foil on the river.
Ask for an orientation or coaching session matched to your ability and the conditions. Returning upwind and recovering safely matter as much as getting on foil.
Plan separate places for swimming, learning and independent riding. A shared waterfront does not mean every activity belongs in the same water.

On September 23, 2026, Big Winds says its 2026 lesson season has finished and it expects to return in May 2027. Confirm the new schedule before arranging a lesson trip.
We have not completed a sourced monthly wind and water-temperature table. Ask for a forecast suited to the exact launch, including direction, gusts, river conditions and exposure protection.
Choose travel dates around both weather and actual service availability. A shop remaining open does not necessarily mean its waterfront rental or lesson programme is operating.
The Port describes a protected cove used for beginner windsurfing and other recreation. Big Winds distinguishes wing handling inside The Hook from beginner foil practice at its exterior sandbar. Confirm the appropriate area, depth and water level with the instructor; the two settings are not interchangeable.

The Port manages a multi-use shoreline shared by paddlers, windsurfers, kiteboarders, boaters and others. Start with its current waterfront information and posted instructions. We are not yet assigning independent wing-launch ratings or exact launch pins.

The Port specifically warns that the Spit/Sandbar changes with river levels, with strong currents and unpredictable depth changes. Do not assume a sandbar offers uniformly shallow, sheltered learning water.

The foil progression expects established wing handling and the ability to stay upwind. Equipment is provided. Ask which class fits your experience and confirm current terms.
This operator lists a private wing lesson at $350: 45 minutes of classroom preparation followed by two hours on the water. A shared lesson is $295 per student for riders at the same level, with the same listed classroom and water durations. Equipment, including wetsuit and booties, is described as included; request details of any jetski or radio support.
Its programmes range from beginner skills through upwind development, high-wind coaching and supervised downwinders. Ask about the location, dates and support for your specific session.

Big Winds publishes $30-per-hour wing-surfing rentals on finned boards at The Hook. Its beginner wing-foil rental is also listed at $30 per hour, but is restricted to lesson customers approved by an instructor and uses a limited punch-card arrangement. Equipment is first come, first served; lessons have priority.
The programme includes protective equipment and is wind dependent. Its posted rental schedule ends in early September; do not assume it is available year-round. Confirm the current season, eligibility and exact gear before traveling.

That learning programme is not evidence of unrestricted advanced demo rentals. If you want a particular board, foil or wing, request confirmation of the complete setup and whether you can take it to another launch.
Our recommendation is to compare each property against the actual lesson meeting point or equipment pickup. A waterfront address alone does not tell you whether the walk is practical with a board and assembled foil.
Prioritize a convenient route to your sessions and daily essentials if you expect to remain around Hood River. Ask for secure equipment storage and a place for wet clothing.
If you plan to travel to different riding areas, compare driving, parking and gear transport alongside the room rate. Get local guidance before choosing a distant launch because its forecast looks stronger.

Columbia Area Transit’s Columbia Gorge Express links Portland’s Gateway Transit Center with Hood River’s CAT Transit Center, with intermediate stops. Check its current timetable for your dates. This is not a direct airport-to-lesson service.

For a flight itinerary through Portland, plan the airport connection separately. Before relying on public transport with foil equipment, ask the carrier about your packed bag dimensions, and arrange the journey from the Hood River stop to your accommodation.
Visit Hood River lists guided paddle trips, rafting, sailing and other water activities. Each has its own operator, conditions and requirements. Plan an alternative that suits your group, rather than expecting every low-wind day to suit every other sport.
